Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole
Admittedly one of the first *adult* series I ever started, I was reading this way before I should have been due to the mature content. That being said, I was hooked on this series from the first book and did everything I could to get my hands on them as they came out. It’s about the Lore with all different types of paranormal species (werewolves, vampires, valkyries, ghosts, demons, halflings etc.) who find their fated mates. I love how the author always mixes up the species so it’s not vampire-vampire. This series is still going and I’m just hoping to see my favorite characters finally find their love. Throw in the “Accession” which occurs every 500 years to weed-down the population of supernaturals- alliances are formed and battles are fought! Start this series with A Hunger Like No Other (technically this is the second book but the first is a novella and I recommend starting with book two)
Lords of the Underworld by Gina Showalter
I picked this series up soon after starting IAD, and soon fell in love with this author. This series focuses on characters who hold a demon from Pandora’s box inside them and are influenced by the sin. Again, this series also mixes up different paranormal races and has a continuing story that flows through all the books as each book features one “sin” finding their happy ending. Start this series with The Darkest Night.
Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
This series revolves around shifters and has a tough main character. The first few books of the series don’t contain as much “adult” content as some of the other series I’ve listed here but nonetheless it’s a great series to dive into if you like werewolves and shapeshifters. Start this series here with Moon Called.
Otherworld by Kelly Armstrong
This series has been turned into a show! It’s aptly named after the first book in the series-Bitten– and focuses on one of the only living female werewolves (the trope being that most females can’t survive the shift once bitten to turn into a werewolf). The series definitely evolves and expands as it goes on and is worth picking up!
Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward
Let me start by saying this series is very long! There are *a lot* of books released in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and spin-offs, so if you find you like this author’s writing style there are plenty of books to binge! I find these books an easy read, again it’s a similar premise to IAD and LotU series above with each book starting a different character from the group. It’s about a horde of ancient vampires and contains enough romance and fighting to keep you entertained. Start this series with Dark Lover
Black Jewels by Anne Bishop
I think the concept of this series is so unique and crazy- the people are born with a “jewel” ranking of power and woman hold the position of authority in this world. Basically men are meant to serve them and as a result the world has become a bit corrupt with men wanting more power than they have and women using their greater power for the worse. There are several main characters and we watch the main female protagonist (Janelle) start as a young girl and grow over the course of the first three books (where the main series ends and then spins off to other storylines). This is one of my most re-read series of all time because I love certain parts of these books and watching the characters evolve. Start this series here with Daughter of the Blood.
A Novel of the Others by Anne Bishop
Another series by Anne Bishop and this one is more tame in terms of romance and adult content- which in this case is not a bad thing! I found I really didn’t miss any sexy-times in this series, if you’ve read it you know what I mean there’s enough cute moments of the main character learning to grown into herself as a women that it almost wouldn’t feel right. This series revolves around a courtyard where many types of supernaturals live (in this world the supernaturals rule over the humans). Meg, the main character, is a human blood prophet running away from the compound she was kept in. The moments alone where she connects with the supernaturals is worth reading this series. Start here with Written in Red.
Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews
This series staring the Baylor family starts with the eldest daughter Nevada. It’s paranormal aspect is that some families have a special gene that allow the people of their line to be born with superpowers. Nevada is a private investigator who has to enlist the help of a person with Prime (the highest level of superpower) status and it’s part crime-solving thriller and part family drama. I definitely recommend the audiobook version of this, the narrator is fantastic. There is also a spin-off of this series starting the 2nd daughter so you know there are more books in the works for the rest of the family! Start this series with Burn for Me here.
I really hope this list helped you find a new series and you enjoy reading these books as much as I have!
